Two NASA astronauts successfully returned to Earth today, in a dramatic “old-school” splashdown. Their capsule was parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico, ending the commercial test flight from Elon Musk`s SpaceX company.
This type of landing called splashdown was last attempted by American astronauts 45 years ago. The water landing happened despite the threat posed by Hurricane Isaias, which is wiping the coast of Florida.
The return of the capsule opens the path for a new SpaceX crew launch next month, with the possibility of tourist flights next year.
“Welcome back to planet Earth and thanks for flying SpaceX,” said company`s Mission Control.
NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley returned to Earth on Sunday aboard the spaceship dubbed Endeavour. It`s the new capsule from Elon Musk`s SpaceX company.
